BUDDHIST

A. Theravada Buddhism. The monastic-centered Buddhism of Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia based on the original teachings of the Buddha.

"Venerable" is a title for an ordained monastic. "Bhikkhu" simply means monk. "Ajahn" is a title for a spiritual teacher

  • Venerable Henepola Gunaratana. Senior Sri Lankan monastic leader in the United States. Founder of the Bhavana Society in West Virginia.
  • Venerable Chuen Phangcham. Abbot of the Midwest Buddhist Meditation Center in Warren, Michigan. Representative of the Council of Thai Buddhist monks in the United States.
  • Ajahn Amaro. Monk and spiritual teacher living at the Abahyagiri Buddhist Monastery in Redwood Valley, California.
  • Ajahn Sundara. Nun and spiritual teacher living at the Abahyagiri Buddhist Monastery.
  • Joseph Goldstein. Co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. Teacher of mindfulness, loving-kindness and insight meditation.

B. Zen Buddhism. The monastic-centered Buddhist school in East Asia, based on the Mahayana teachings. "Zen" is the Japanese name of what is known in China as "Ch'an" Buddhism, and in Korea as "Son" Buddhism.

"Sunim" is a monastic title.

  • Venerable Heng Sure. Teacher in the lineage of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in California. Abbot of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery.
  • Venerable Shohaku Okumura. Representative to the United States of the Headquarters of Soto Zen in Japan. Lives in San Francisco.
  • Venerable Guo Yuan Fa Shi. Abbot of the Ch'an Meditation Center in Elmhurst, New York. Disciple of Dharma Master Sheng-yen, of Dharma Drum Mountain in Taiwan, in the Lin-chi (Japanese Rinzai) tradition.
  • Abbot John Daido Loori. Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery in Mt. Tremper, New York. American Rinzai Zen teacher.
  • Samu Sunim. Korean Son master in the Chogye Order. President of the Buddhist Society for Compassionate Wisdom. Lives at his temple in Chicago.
  • Zoketzu Norman Fischer. Co-abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center. Teacher of Soto Zen.
  • Zenkai Blanche Hartman. Co-abbess of the San Francisco Zen Center. Teacher of Soto Zen.
  • Professor Stephanie Kaza. Zen practitioner associated with the San Francisco Zen Center. Professor of Environmental Studies, University of Vermont.

C. Tibetan Buddhism. The monastic-centered Buddhism of Tibet, that combines Theravada monastic discipline with Mahayana Buddhist teachings and the esoteric practice of Tantra.

"Geshe" is the highest academic title in the Tibetan Buddhist monastic educational system. "Rinpoche" is a title for a spiritual teacher.

  • Yangsi Rinpoche. Assistant to Geshe Lhundup Sopa.
  • Venerable Thubten Chodron, an American-born Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition, is a Dharma teacher and writer.
  • Lama Eric Marcoux. Tibetan Buddhist practitioner of the Waking Peacock Sangha, Portland, Oregon.
